Death kickstarted the death-metal movement with Scream Blood Gore and leveled up the budding genre with the sophisticated grotesquery of Leprosy. 1990’s Spiritual Healing marked another exquisite refinement for Death, if not metal as a whole. Chuck Schuldiner’s guitar voicings got more bizarre and jazz-like. Prog-ish pivots got even more extreme and frantic. But Death likewise scaled back the mania for some truly terror-sludging sections. And while Schuldiner’s lyrics once relied to horror tropes, nothing seemed scarier than the manipulative, hypocritical faith healers he howled of on the record’s title track.
