While Deftones’ debut album Adrenaline impressed the alt-metal scene when it dropped in the mid Nineties, it’s follow-up full-length Around the Fur that made the Sacramento outfit full-blown icons. The slinking sludge riff Stephen Carpenter laces into opener “My Own Summer (Shove It)” is at the top of Deftones’ highlight reel, but Around the Fur further crystalizes their early aesthetic through codeine-glazed melodies, hypnagogic beats and the sensually menacing mic work of Chino Moreno.
