The Atlanta prog-metal titans have long channeled pain and tragedy into their music. But times have never been this grim as the passing of their late, great manager Nick John in 2018 dominated the minds and souls of the Mastodon members. However, it turned into a cathartic experience. “It’s gone way beyond any therapy I could ever seek elsewhere,” bassist Troy Sanders says. “I’ve spent half of my life in this band and I’ve seen more, experienced more with these three guys than I’ve done with anyone else on earth.
