Iron Maiden went high-concept and extra-proggy for their aptly-titled seventh album. Certainly one of the band’s most ambitious releases to that point, Seventh Son merges traditional, Maiden-esque galloping and epic-sized arrangements with slickened synth digitalis, acoustic guitar fingering and a heady storyline surrounding a clairvoyant prophet tormented by his visions of the future. While often complex and cerebral, the record also sports one of the group’s brightest pop-metal bangers (“Can I Play with Madness”). A visionary release that still sounds fresh nearly 40 years later.
