It’s hard to remember a time when Pearl Jam weren’t sewn into the hard-rock lexicon, but the Seattle group’s staggeringly anthemic debut album sealed the deal pretty quickly. “Even Flow” and “Alive” mixed Nineties grunge-scene heaviness with a flair for classic-rock guitar hooks, while Ten also brought blues-grimed edginess (“Deep”), funk-rock twitchiness (“Why Go,” “Porch”) and ethereally surf-stained balladry (“Oceans”) to the mix. A 10/10 debut.
