While the songs on The Legacy warned metal fans of a foreboding apocalypse and the screaming demons in our midst, Testament still spread the good gospel of Bay Area thrash with their raging debut album. Its nine songs introduced us to an emerging guitar phenom in the form of speed-shredder Alex Skolnick, not to mention the gravelly power-wail of frontman Chuck Billy (though many lyrics were penned by original singer Steve Souza, who dipped out to join fellow thrashers Exodus). This 1987 album marks the first chapter of one of metal’s greatest success stories. The Legacy, indeed.
