The Mars Volta’s third full-length hearkened back to Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala’s post-hardcore past…at least kind of. It’s the album where former At the Drive-In bassist Paul Hinojos re-entered his old bandmates’ orbit to add undulating sonic weirdness to their prog-freakouts, while the album’s “Viscera Eyes” revisited unfinished riffs from the ATDI era. 

On the other hand, that punkish energy had since transmogrified into the Mars Volta’s broader soul-jazz vision quest of meter-twitchy progressive complexity, horn section explosiveness, and it featured extra guitar acrobatics from John Frusciante. Pure insanity.
