The sound of punk music was shifting drastically at the beginning of the 21st century, and Thrice were right on the frontlines of that sea change. Their 2002 breakout, The Illusion of Safety, fused the anthemic power and scrappy catchiness of Nineties emo with the scream-driven force of new-gen post-hardcore, resulting in a sound that metalcore fans and pop-punk heads could mutually agree on. While it still hits hard 20 years later, it no longer sounds groundbreaking — which is proof of its lasting influence.
